July 1990 MEMO TO EDITORS: FROM STATES NEWS SERVICE

A New York Times story of July 12, 1990 ("CIA Tie Asserted In Indonesia Purge") questioned certain assertions in the States News Service report on the U.S. role in helping the Indonesian Army locate members of the nation's Communist party in 1965.

The Times story asserted that transcripts of taped interviews with former U.S. officials do not support the contention that top embassy officials knew of, and approved, the release of the names. The Times reported that some of these officials told the Times they had, "no involvement" in the action of a mid-level embassy official, Robert J. Martens, who turned over the lists to an army intermediary.

The Times writer erred in his description of what the transcripts show, and on other points described below.

If you have further questions, more material from these and other interviews with embassy and Washington officials is available.
